Toys and clothing for children are sought by Mustard Seed School , a free, private school for kids 3 to 15 years of age. Mustard Seed is located within the Loaves & Fishes facility on No. C St. in Sacramento. Mustard Seed was established two decades ago to meet the needs of children who have been out of school, or denied school, because of homelessness. According to text at the school’s webspace, “Many homeless children are not enrolled in school because the places their families find to sleep are often not near a school and the family [plans to be where they are for only] a short time. Sometimes the [available public] school needs an address or updated immunizations which homeless families cannot provide.” Other reasons a child might be denied school enrollment are because of the lack of a birth certificate or other essential documentation. Volunteers of America is seeking "caring gift" donations for the 2008 Christmas season . One of their programs, Gifts of Warmth , seeks new hats, gloves, scarves and socks that will be given out to people staying at shelters it administers. Another, Adopt-a-family , hopes to fulfill the Christmas wishes of many poor Sacramento families in VOA's transitional-living programs and seniors in VOA's affordable-living apartment units. The organization is hoping to close its drives on Dec 12, but a collection site at Country Club Plaza will be open until the 20th for items, and cash donations will be accepted whenever received. Loaves & Fishes has announced some details about their Christmas Day Feast for the Homeless that will begin at 11am on the 25th. In the organization’s December Newsletter , we are told that L&F expects to feed “a delicious complete hot meal that day to over 1,000 hungry men, women, and children” and expects to prepare “200 cooked or smoked hams and … 300 baked pies.” On their holiday meal list , the organization asks for donations of cooked or smoked hams, any kind of baked pie, aerosol whipped cream, large bottles of apple juice and bags of red potatoes. The homeless-help facility is also planning to give “Christmas stockings” to guests at the event. Each stocking will contain a variety of practical items a homeless person can use.
