Sixteen-year-old takes Grunge Plunge into Homeless World Sacramento

A story in the Roseville Press-Tribune , ten days ago, " Granite Bay resident takes 'the plunge' ," tells the story of Jesuit High 11th grader E.J. Borg who spent his sixteenth birthday among the homeless in Sacramento. Borg's adventure was part of a class project, "devoted to Christian service," where he and four other select students pretended they were homeless. To do this, he and his fellow students spent a lot of time at Loaves & Fishes for an extended weekend. It began on a Friday afternoon. Borg and the others were given a tour of Quinn Cottages, a transitional-housing facility on A Street in Sacramento, and then spoke with some of the cottage residents. For the weekend, Borg and his colleagues bedded down in sleeping bags on the grass in locked Friendship Park, under the protection of security guards. The concert will feature Sacramento Youth Symphony , conducted by musical director Michael Neumann, and will, in part, benefit Loaves & Fishes , a premier source of aid to the homeless in our fair metropolis. Updated Info on Youth Concert to Benefit L&F

Loaves & Fishes has released some updated information on a youth concert that will benefit Northern California homeless youth. L&F is among the organizations that will share in revenue from the charity event. The event, Bay of Hope 2009 -- or, Bay Area Youth Orchestra Festival -- will be held at Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco on Sunday, January 18, at 2PM. Six northern California youth orchestras will perform, including Sacramento Youth Symphony . The other orchestras performing are: California Youth Symphony , Oakland Youth Orchestra , Peninsula Youth Orchestra , San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra , and Young People’s Symphony Orchestra . WIND Youth Services Seeks Donations

A story today in the Sacramento Bee, " Center for homeless teens needs cooking gear ," highlighted cooking classes WIND offers to homeless teens, and reported on the inadequate cookware and utensils the young people had to prepare meals. The north Sacramento drop-in center provides breakfast and lunch to youth it serves. "I do a lot of cooking in the kitchen," said one young woman, Elizabeth, who was aided by WIND as a teen, but now, at age 20, is a cook and janitor for the organization. "I couldn't find any tongs to turn the chicken patties today. I used a big spoon. You use what you have."
