Why You Should NEVER Support Regulating the Public Feeding of Homeless People

In what seems to me to be stunning prescience by the Redding Homeless blogger, a blog post there, just days before our city's "Bee Flip Out," provides the reasoning why Christians [and everyone, I would gainly add] must always oppose efforts to regulate individuals or groups who graciously choose to publicly feed homeless people.  I present a close rendition of the Redding post below.  You may view Redding Homeless Blog's original post, dated 9/6, here. The splendid credo of the Redding blog is this: "We are against practices and laws that unfairly single out homeless people and criminalize them for everyday living and life-sustaining activities." sacHO's use of this material comes with permission.

A spirit is circulating around the leaders and charities which serve the homeless and those who attempt to defend their constitutional and civil rights. It's claimed our giving is hurting and not helping the homeless, and instead of giving food to the homeless it would be better to give the money used to purchase that food to established charities and homeless shelters where that money could be put to "better use."

Of course, you will find no such spirit or direction in the Bible. The Christian community, called the Church, is there to help, as Jesus says "the least of these My brethren", "for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me."

You are the Church...

Christians must interact with their fellow humans and have fellowship with the poor and homeless.  Those given the grace to see realize that giving a sandwich or an article of much-needed clothing is an opportunity to minister to those hurting and lost on at a deep spiritual level.

You see, GOD LOVES TO USE HIS PEOPLE!, and through the Holy Spirit and your faith, love, and interaction, the Lord can plant the seeds to spiritually feed and cloth those in need, and through the believer pour forth the "Living Waters" to those who so desperately thirst.

It is not only true that "God has chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him."

You, too, may receive a powerful and suprising blessing from those whom you are serving!

You see, in giving what you have freely received and administering compassion you are spiritually fed and clothed and given spiritual "water" to drink, healed from spiritual sicknesses, and then will break free through the bars which hold you in prison.

"For with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you.”

Those that wish to regulate the feeding and care of the homeless and leave it to the "pros" do not have those eyes to see, or ears to hear what God through Jesus Chris and the Holy Spirit has given to his body of believers, called "The Church"

Reconsider giving cash donations to those charities which follow government regulations and post permits in order to feed the homeless.  Be wary of charities that cannot show they are good of heart and wholly good intentioned.

Regulations and permits are the first steps cities and municipalities use to criminalize and repress the poor and homeless.

Make unannounced visits to those organizations you donate to to verify that they deserve your trust by quite evidently doing good work that benefits the poor.

Don't allow the spiritual thieves to steal from you, calling your compassionate love offerings an act of "feel good" giving, but "lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

You see, God does not call the qualified or pros, but, Himself, qualifies those He calls to administer to those in need.

God is holding his ministries more accountable than ever before.  Salaries and pay checks are at stake.

A spirit is circulating... it's not of God

Don't let anyone squelch the Spirit of Love and Charity which dwells in you.

Love your neighbor, let no law or regulation be formed against this and remember...

"When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return, and repayment come to you. But when you give a reception, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed, since they do not have the means to repay you."

Let no one criminalize and regulate the practicing of your faith and and religion...

Pure and undefiled religion before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their trouble, and to keep oneself unspotted from the world.

And the spirit of the world wants you to stop...

I love Redding Homeless Blog's words -- certainly in the spirit of Christians.

Now, I am Buddhist. I hope that RHB does not disapprove, but I would say a Buddhist rending would be similar. At the end of Zen's Ox Herding sequence, the ego disappears and the monk goes into the marketplace. He is blissfully unbothered by drama, fully availed to do what is right.
I noticed the Sac Bee article mentioned some compassionate folks from the Sikh community coming to practice their faith and feed homeless folks in Sacramento, as the Sikh community does here in Redding as well. This seems to be an attack on many faith's beliefs, as well as an attack on humanity itself.

YES. The Sikhs are wonderful. The article mentions a man from Yuba City, I believe. But the Sikh Temple in West Sacramento is huge, and it is them that I associate with feeding the homeless near Sacramento's Loaves & Fishes and the Union Gospel Mission. Here, a short video were the leader cites the Sikh religion as being open to everybody with central virtues of humbleness, work and sharing.

They are very cool, but sadly are wrongly associated with Arab terrorism.
APPALLING!! AS AN EX POLICE OFFICER NOW A HOMELESS DISABLED VET THOSE OFFICERS ABUSED THEIR OFFICE AND POWER BY FOLLOWING AN UNLAWFUL ORDER UNDER P.C. 49 OF THE CALIFORNIA PENAL CODE ( SEE SIMILAR FL P.C.) THIS IS HOW AND WHY POLICE DEPRAVED CAN AND HAVE BEEN DISBANNED THE ORLANDO POLICE DEPT AND THE MAYOR SHOULD BE DISBANNED AND REFORMED...IT IS ALSO THE DUTY AND THE PEROGITIVE OF A POLICE OFFICER TO DECIDE UNDER CONSCIOUS OF ACT WHETHER OR NOT HE CAN OR SHOULD FOLLOW SUCH ORDERS...IN OTHER WORDS HE IS...NOT.... COMPELLED TO FOLLOW ORDERS HE KNOWS IN HIS HEART TO BE MORALLY WRONG!!!!!!!! IT DICKENS ME TO BE AN AMERICAN AFTER WITNESSING THESE DISPICABLE ACTS UPON OUR CITZENRY IT'S A GOOD THING I WAS NOT THERE!!! IN THE END THE CONSTITUTION WOULD BE ON MY SIDE AND EVERYONE INVOLVED WOULD BE IMPRISONED AND OUT OF A JOB ONLY TO BE IN NEED OF BEING FED IN A PARK!!! WHEN THEY GOT OUT!!! ......ABSOLUTELY APPALLING!!!!!!! AND UNBELIEVABLE IN THIS COUNTRY SOMEONE SHOULD TAKE THIS TO THE SUPREME COURT!!!

Whoa! Thanks, Bill. I hope readers keep reading -- through the comments, to see yours. Powerful words. Indeed the guarantee of free speech and the human need to eat AND the human need to address, compassionately, circumstances where others are suffering.

I didn't know this until I read your spiel, but the police are not in harness. They are compelled to do what is right. And they should.

More obstacles revealed in effort to make Mather cottages habitable

Mold, asbestos and lead paint, oh my! The 35 cottages out at Mather Community Campus seem closer to being condemned today than ever again being inhabited. But the expectation that some of the cottages can and will be restored to house homeless families before spring abides. A report in the Sacramento Bee tells us ... Some [of the cottages] have extensive mold, a county analysis showed. It's not clear how the county planned to deal with lead paint and asbestos, [Rancho Cordova] Councilwoman Linda Budge said. Still, hope of getting some of the cottages in shape such that homeless families can move in is in play, though not before New Year's day.  Word of where the money might come from to make needed restorations has not been forthcoming, though it is known that the Winter Shelter Task Force hopes to hold a fundraiser to boost the pool of funds to meet the need to keep homeless people warm and safe. At the end of October, placing families, totalling 105 individuals, was

Ron Russell and Summerhills Realty

Readers of this blog should be aware that I am receiving some information that Summerhills Realty and someone named Ron E. Russell is using this blog as a reference in an effort to scam homeless people.  Be aware that Mr. Russell and his business is cited as a possible perpetrator of fraud by a website called Ripoff Report .  See this webpage .  Also, there is this claim of fraud against Ron Russell Properties at the website BizClaims - Latest scams, frauds and complaints . Please be aware that the information of being 'ripped off'' may be coming from only one source is coming from multiple sources, with perhaps as many as twelve persons/couples now pursuing legal action after paying thousands of dollars for services and receiving none of the services that were promised/contracted. While I know neither Mr. Russell nor Summerhills, I do know that an inordinate number of “in links” from readers of this blog have come via summerhillsrealestate.com for quite some time.  I

Loaves & Fishes implicates Buddhism and Jack Kornfield in its June Donations Plea.

The Sukhothai Traimit Golden Buddha was found in a clay-and-plaster overlaid buddha statue in 1959, after laying in wait for 500 years. It's huge and heavy: just under 10 feet tall and weighs 5 1/2 tons. At the beginning of their June newsletter , Loaves and Fishes relates a story, taken from the beginning of renowned Buddhist teacher Jack Kornfield's 2008 book The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology . The first part and first chapter in Kornfield's book is "Part I: Who are you really?" and chapter 1 is called "Nobility: Our Original Goodness," which ought to serve as a clue to what the beginning of the book is about, not that that sentiment isn't strewn through-out the chapter, section and book such that what Kornfield is telling us should be crystal clear. Somehow, the not-ready-for-primetime management at Loaves & Fishes have managed to use Kornfield's wise and kindly words in a way that mangles th
